This is a small routine, and it is the reason a lot of us stopped driving to Mount Dora for a weeknight walk.
If you live in Tavares, you have watched downtown change faster than the rest of Lake County. The thesis of this post is simple: the lakefront has quietly consolidated into a walkable evening circuit. One family of operators has stitched Ruby Street into a single after-work destination, and the city's park programming now runs often enough that summer works as a nightly rhythm rather than a special occasion. Below is how to use it.
The Ruby Street Shift
For years, "downtown Tavares" meant a courthouse, a couple of lunch spots, and a beautiful lake nobody could easily drink a cocktail next to. That changed largely because of one husband-and-wife team. David and Hillary Perry, along with their business partner Emad Shahid, own Nautilus Coffee Co., The Argonaut Bar & Lounge, Ironworks Steakhouse, Poppy's Ice Cream, and The Citrus Hotel, and have played a pivotal role in revitalizing the local dining and hospitality scene. Their newest concept sits on top of the hotel. Citrus Sky Bar has officially opened atop the Citrus on the Lake Boutique Hotel at 199 W. Ruby St., with views of Lake Dora, a curated cocktail menu, and elevated food. Co-owner David Perry describes it as Lake County's first and only rooftop bar.
That is a lot of names to keep straight, so here is the way most residents actually think about the block:

The Lakefront As A Calendar, Not A Destination
The second thing that changed is programming. Wooton Park was already the anchor. Wooton Park sits on the north side of the lake, has a playground and splash pad, benches for the views, and a pier at the Tavares Pavilion on the Lake to watch the seaplanes take off and land. What is newer is how often the city and its partners actually put something in it.
A short list of what to know for this summer and fall:
- Monthly food-truck night. The Tavares Lakefront Food Trucks & Market is a monthly event at Wooton Park, running 5 to 9 p.m. Check the city calendar for the current month's Friday. Bring a chair. Parking garage at 200 N. Sinclair is usually your best bet if you are not walking from home.
- Rocktoberfest & Monster Splash Fly-In. The annual Monster Splash Seaplane Fly-In brings pilots in for flying contests including the popular Pumpkin Drop, with seaplanes arriving around nine in the morning. It is paired with Rocktoberfest, so plan for a full day, not a drop-in.
- Planes, Tunes & BBQ. The spring version of the same idea. Spring 2026 marked the city's 18th Annual Planes, Tunes & BBQ on March 6 and 7 at Wooton Park, and if you missed it, put it on next year's calendar early because parking fills.
- Fourth of July. The city runs a free 4th of July Parade and Fireworks with live entertainment by Blonde Ambition Band. This is the one night the whole downtown loop becomes a single event.
The city was also recently featured on public television. WUCF TV's Central Florida Roadtrip featured the City of Tavares, America's Seaplane City, in a PBS episode. If a relative visits from out of state and says they saw a show about your town, that is the one.
Watching Seaplanes Without An Event
You do not need a festival to see the seaplanes. Weekday early evenings, when the lake glasses off, are honestly better than a crowded Saturday. Two spots most residents rotate between:
- The pier at the Tavares Pavilion on the Lake. Straight line of sight to the water lane. Fewer people on a Tuesday.
- Wooton Park's northern benches. Better if you have a stroller or a dog and want room to move.
Bring bug spray in July and August. That is not romantic, it is accurate.
A Weeknight Loop You Can Actually Walk
Here is a routine that a lot of us have quietly settled into. It is not a bucket list. It is roughly a mile of walking, and it is the same loop three or four nights a week for the people who use it.
Start at Nautilus for a late-afternoon coffee. Cut down toward Ruby Street and take the shaded side. Walk into Wooton Park from the east entrance and go all the way out to the pavilion pier. Watch whatever is on the water. On a Friday, that might be the food-truck market spilling across the lawn. On a Wednesday, it is usually just a couple of pilots and a paddleboarder.
Loop back through the park to Ruby Street. If it is early, get a scoop at Poppy's and sit outside. If it is later and the kids are home, the Argonaut is two doors down. If it is a birthday or a "we should do something nice" night, Ironworks is the answer, and you can end upstairs on the Citrus Sky Bar rooftop for the last of the sunset.
One tip that is not obvious until you have tried it: the rooftop faces the same water the seaplanes land on. If you time a drink there for around 7 p.m. in July, you will get both the sky color and the last flights in the same twenty minutes. That is the best free show in Lake County, and you are paying for the cocktail, not the view.
Two Things To Know For Summer 2026 Specifically
First, the water situation. The City of Tavares has implemented Phase 3 Water Conservation Measures following a St. Johns River Water Management District order. This mostly matters for irrigation schedules, but it is worth knowing before you plan a big backyard party or a lawn refresh. Check the city's site for the specifics that apply to your address.
Second, the boat traffic. Summer weekends on Lake Dora get busy because the Harris Chain draws visitors from all over Central Florida. Leesburg is known as one of the nation's best bass fishing areas, and that traffic passes through our waters. If you have friends coming in and want a calmer evening on the pier, aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday before 8 p.m. rather than a Saturday at sunset.
Why This Matters If You Already Live Here
The reason to bother writing any of this down is that a lot of Tavares residents still think of "going out" as a drive to Mount Dora or Winter Park. It was a reasonable habit five years ago. It is no longer the shortest path to a good evening. Between the Perry family's Ruby Street concepts, the city's monthly programming at Wooton Park, and the seaplanes doing their thing whether or not anyone is watching, the lakefront has become a routine you can use nightly. The circuit is not glamorous. It is just consistently there, roughly a mile long, and mostly free.
